KIPP Philadelphia Social Work Superheroes

In honor of National Social Work Awareness Month, KIPP Philadelphia Public Schools is shining a light on our amazing social workers! Our social workers help us create joyful, academically excellent schools that prepare students with the skills and confidence they need to pursue the paths they choose — college, career, and beyond — so they can lead fulfilling lives and build a more just world.

Ms. Elissa Lopez — KIPP North Philadelphia Academy

Alma Mater: Georgia State University undergraduate, University of Pennsylvania graduate program.

Currently Working On: Implementing a Feelings Friday for staff and students to learn about feelings and coping skills along with also providing space to have community and check in with old friends and make new friends.

Social Work Mantra: Setting boundaries is an act of self-love and self-care.

Ms. Juliette Szczepaniak — KIPP West Philadelphia Elementary Academy

Alma Mata: Catholic University undergraduate, The University of Pennsylvania graduate program

Currently Working On: Making sure students feel like they are a part of the school community virtually or in person. Lastly, making sure all kids in the building feel safe and loved

Ms. Ariyon Fountaine — KIPP Philadelphia Elementary Academy

Alma Mater: The University of Pennsylvania graduate program

Currently Working On: Giving resources to teachers addressing school closing anniversary.

Social Work Mantra: “You have to meet people where they are!”

Ms. Tara Stanley — KIPP Philadelphia Preparatory Academy

Alma Mater: Virginia Union University for undergrad and Widener University for graduate program.

Currently Working On: Creating a Social Emotional Curriculum that provides opportunities across the region, which form non-judgmental Brave Spaces that foster a cultural humility infused Safe Space for student well-being and success.

Social Work Mantra: “Children will not remember what you said, nor what you did, they will only remember how you made them feel.”

Ms. Maren Turner — KIPP West Philadelphia Preparatory Charter School

Alma Mater: University of Michigan undergraduate, University of Pennsylvania graduate program

Currently Working On: Creating a strong MTSS program that supports students holistically and in a way that is trauma-responsive and built to address the needs of the current moment.

Social Work Mantra: “All young people are capable of greatness and deserve to be supported by people who want to be present, who believe in them, and who are willing to be their constant champion.”

Ms. Taylor Henry — KIPP DuBois Collegiate Academy

Currently Working On: Helping teachers address the social emotional needs of the students

Ms. Jakasha Johnson — KIPP DuBois Collegiate Academy

Alma Mata: University of Pittsburgh undergraduate, Bryn Mawr graduate program

Currently Working On: Helping staff understand the value of social work. Helping students achieve self-efficacy
