Meet Kindergarten Teacher, Ms. Canty
When you walk into the Grand Canyon Kindergarten classroom at KIPP Philadelphia Elementary Academy, you can see learning happening every day.
“We educate. It’s just about providing a safe environment, it’s about looking at a child’s needs, meeting the needs, and helping them supersede those needs,” says Ms. Syreeta Canty, lead teacher. Ms. Canty has been an educator since she graduated from Cheyney University in 1999.
“Kindergarten was my fit,” says Ms. Canty. She started her career as a 6th grade teacher, but has spent most of her education years teaching Kindergarten and Pre-K. “I’ve developed a relationship not just with my kids, but with families.”
This is Ms. Canty’s first year with KIPP Philadelphia Public Schools. She says she loves being part of the team and family. “KIPP shares my vision,” says Ms. Canty. “KIPP gives you an appreciation for who you are. Children that come, they can be proud of who they are. We celebrate all cultures in the school and I love that.”
Ms. Canty was born and raised in Philadelphia. She says her 2nd grade teacher inspired her to become an educator.
“It’s more than just providing for children; it’s giving resources to families. That’s one thing that we do at KIPP,” says Ms. Canty “KIPP shares my vision.”
